Even more than in most Western countries, public debates about environmental issues in Taiwan continue to be dominated by the natural sciences. Drawing on several case studies from recent projects to protect Taiwan’s vulnerable wetlands, this talk will examine the role which culturally specific beliefs and attitudes play in these efforts, and suggest ways in which humanistic scholarship and pedagogy might contribute to them in the future.
